The Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care (RQF) is the Ofqual-recognised qualification that replaces the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services (RQF), which expired on 31 December 2019. 

This Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care (RQF)  is the current Ofqual-accredited qualification for Registered Managers and is recognised by CQC and Skills For Care as the qualification for Managers of care and support services for adults that are regulated and inspected by the CQC in England.


About the Qualification

This qualification, the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care (RQF), covers all the knowledge and skills requirements of managers in various care settings regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), whether health care or social care, according to the requirements of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014.  

Usual job roles within care services of those working towards this qualification include:

  • Deputy managers, and Assistant managers

Main types of regulated care settings where learners work

Residential Care - This qualification is for managers and aspiring managers of residential settings for adults. This means those who manage 

  • residential care homes for adults, 
  • nursing homes for adults, and 
  • any other residential setting caring for adults. 


Community Care  settings- This qualification is for managers and aspiring managers in a range of non residential care settings. 

  • Domiciliary Care Agencies for adults
  • Day care services for adults, 
  • services for people with learning disabilities and 
  • substance misuse services
  • And other non-residential community-based services


Health Care settings -  This qualification is for managers and aspiring managers in a range of health care settings in England including 

  • NHS hospitals and 
  • independent hospitals, 
  • GP surgeries, NHS walk-in centres, 
  • NHS out-of-hours services, 
  • dentists, 
  • ambulances, 
  • mental health services, 
  • hospices, and 
  • any other setting delivering healthcare. 


Learners studying the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care (RQF) qualification develop the skills and knowledge in leadership and management to ensure that services can respond fully to the needs and aspirations of those that use their provision, and are fully compliant with the regulatory requirements.

This accredited qualification is awarded by Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance (HABC).

Learners undertaking the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care (RQF) will acquire and use skills of leadership, mentoring, coaching and reflection through work-based learning opportunities.

The Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care (RQF) is most suitable for those working in a managerial role in adult care settings who are looking to progress their career. It is also appropriate for managers who have not yet achieved a vocational qualification at Level 5. 

Completing the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care (RQF) enables the manager to: 

  • Confirm occupational competence and "licence to practice" as Registered Manager. 
  • Confirm competence in an occupational role to the Registered Manager standards as required

The Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care (RQF) currently runs concurrently with the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services (RQF) as recognised qualifications for Registered Managers. 

On 31 December 2019, the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services (RQF) expired to new registrations. The Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care (RQF) is now the current recognised qualification for Registered Managers of all care settings, such as residential care homes, nursing homes, domiciliary care agencies, nursing care agencies, day care settings for adults, and job roles and similar care settings.

The Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care (RQF) is nationally recognised and is based on the Health and Social Care National Occupational Standards (NOS) and the Skills for Care Management Induction Standards (MIS). The NOS, MIS, assessment principles and qualification structure are owned by the Sector Skills Council, Skills for Care.

The aim of the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care is to guide and assess the knowledge and skills relating to leadership and management within adult care. Learners undertaking this qualification will be working in a managerial role in a variety of adult care settings.

As learners engage with the units of this qualification, they will learn more about how to develop leadership and management skills. As a leader in adult care, the learner will become an important role model for others, inspiring staff and raising aspirations. Learners will be able to respond to drivers in adult care through strong leadership, values base, innovation, and business insight.

This E-Learning and Assessment delivery option includes basic support with online learning materials, and then full assessment, with the learner fully in charge of their own timetable.

The learner has access to online resources on our Online Learning System for learning, and our e-Portfolio for assessments and assignments. The learner fully in charge of their own timetable. 

Course fees cover all training, learner support, assessments and feedback, and awarding body certification on completion. 

Extra Training  support available on request

1) Extra One-to-One Training - Learners can also purchase extra live tutorial support with extra live tutorials for each unit, in addition to the e-learning, should take the delivery option titled

This Extra One-to-One Training delivery option includes 50 extra hours of live tutorials support in addition to all the basic support available on the e-Learning and Assessment option. The extra live tutorials also suit those learners who can't attend the group learning and would prefer to schedule extra live tutorials  for private tutorials for each unit, in addition to the e-learning basic support with online learning materials, and full assessment.  Those who want to complete faster will find the extra live tutorials particularly useful.

2) Fast or Accelerated Duration - for learners who want to complete the qualification within 9 months or less. Speak to us about these extra support services if you are interested.


Assessments and assessment methods used 

The learner has 24-hour access to their e-Portfolio for assessments and assignments. 

Your trainer/assessor will guide you in producing a portfolio of evidence that provides evidence of your knowledge and performance. 

Assessments are flexible and involve a variety of assessment methods including: 

  • written questions, 
  • oral questioning, 
  • professional discussions, 
  • observation of work-based performance,  
  • work-based evidence, 
  • personal statements 
  • reflective accounts 
  • witness testimony, 
  • and more. 


How long does it take – Duration of the course

Usual Duration - Most learners take between 18 months to 24 months to complete the qualification.

Learners who want to complete faster than 12 months, should talk to us, as this will involve very intensive work on our part. Those learners wanting to complete the qualification in less than 12 months must pay the full fee upfront. 

We allow learners Flexible Duration. Learners can complete the qualification as fast as they want, however learners must be aware that all assessments must be completed to the required Level 5 standard. 

There are at least 25 units to complete. Many learners can complete the qualification within between 12 to 18 months. Some learners take between 24 and 30 months.

We can extend the duration to 36 months and support the learner to complete their learning. 


Programme Content – What you will study

To complete the Highfield Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care (RQF), learners must complete a minimum of 80 credits along the following Awarding Body Rules of Combination:

all units contained within the mandatory group totaling 60 credits

• a minimum of 20 credits across the optional groups:

o a maximum of 6 credits from optional group A

o the remaining credits from optional group B, minimum of 14 credits

On full completion of this qualification, the learner will receive the full Highfield Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care (RQF), issued by Highfield Qualifications (Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance - HABC). 


Career Path following completion

Completing this qualification makes you fully qualified to manage a care facility, or health facility for adults. It makes you eligible for Registered Manager status with the CQC.
