Care Certificate Standard 14

Handling information

Overview and Objectives of this course

This course meets the Care Certificate Standard on Handling Information and also the statutory and mandatory training requirements, compliance and learning outcomes for the Data Security Awareness Level 1 within the UK Core Skills Training Framework (UK CSTF)

This course covers key learning which is necessary to understand data security, the Data Protection Act 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation, good record keeping and the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

At the end of this session, you should have a good understanding of your individual as well as your organisation's responsibilities in the importance of protecting, or safely sharing, your own and others' data. Effectively practising what you learn will help you and your organisation to comply with data security and protection requirements, standards, your organisation's policies and most importantly comply with relevant law.

There are certain roles within the health and social care sector that will need to have a more detailed understanding of data security, for example those working in information governance (IG). Your organisation will be able to provide you with details of the further training you are required to undertake.

Session Objectives

  • Describe the importance of data security in health and social care
  • Outline the steps you must follow to ensure you comply with the law
  • Explain the National Data Guardian (NDG) Standards and your responsibilities
  • Define potential threats to the security of information and how you can avoid or minimise them
  • Identify data breaches and how to avoid them
  • Outline the principles of good record keeping
  • Describe the responsibilities of health and social care organisations under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and what you can do to support compliance with this law

About the full Care Certificate

The Care Certificate is an induction programme for new starters within health and social care.

The Care Certificate is a key component of the overall induction that employers must provide to their staff, legally and in order to meet the essential standards set out by the Care Quality Commission.

The Care Certificate was developed jointly by Skills for Care, Health Education England and Skills for Health.

The Care Certificate is an agreed set of standards that define the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of specific job roles in the health and social care sectors. It's made up of the 15 minimum standards that should be covered if you are 'new to care' or changing jobs, and should form part of a robust induction programme.

The Care Certificate is line with the latest UK legislation and meet the requirements set out by Skills for Care, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Health and Safety Executive and other professional and regulatory bodies
